The idea to link the two districts trough a bridge from Ikoyi to Lekki, was mooted in 2003 by the state government to decongest traffic on New Epe Express Way.
Lekki-Ikoyi-Bridge bridge across the Five Cowry Creek in Lagos, one of the largest cities in the world, will connect two heavily congested districts, thereby relieving city traffic. The plans for Nigeria’s first cable-stayed bridge were drawn up by design specialists from Julius Berger Nigeria.
The structure comprises a 700-meter full-span approach bridge. Connected to this is a cable stayed segmental bridge of more than 600 meters in length, at the center of which is a 91-meter high pylon.
Two TENSA-FLEX rubber compound sliding finger expansion joints with longitudinal movement capacity of 400mm each will be installed. The very slender design of the bridge decks required a technical solution without major interaction with the structure itself. The proposed joints are simply bolted onto the deck structure ensuring 100% water tightness. The sliding fingers of the upper part are installed with a downward pre-tension and therefore apply a permanent pressure to the opposing sliding surface of the lower part allowing for small vertical movements as well as for rotations.
