Liberty Bridge

Project description

The Liberty Bridge in Budapest connects Buda and Pest across the River Danube. It is the third southernmost public road bridge of the Hungarian capital located at the southern end of the city centre. The bridge was built between 1894 and 1896 and imitates the general outline of a chain-type bridge. The structure is 333 m in length and 20 m wide.

This twin road bridge features two pedestrian lanes on each side and in addition tram railways for the several tram lines running between Buda and Pest. Reconstruction works of the bridge started in 2007 and comprised the construction of new tram rails, changing the pavement, reinforcement of the entire steel structure and bridge tiers.

The fingers of the joints feature a geometrical design that balances the different levels of the tram rails and the bridge‘s surface.

In addition, the joints‘ surface plates were equipped with a 2 mm deep pattern, hence improving the gripping of over-passing vehicles.
