Chone Hospital

Project description

Due to a severe earthquake of magnitude 7.8 in April 2016, the General Hospital of the city of Chone in western Ecuador had to be rebuilt with two main priorities: reconstruction should be as quick as possible to enable it to resume attending local population, and the new building should be able to withstand any similar seismic events in the future thereby protect lives, save reconstruction costs, and avoid loss of service when it is most needed. It was decided to seismically isolate the building by supporting it on isolator bearings.

mageba scope

Of the various types of seismic isolators available, pendulum isolators were selected considering the project’s specific needs. 156 RESTON®PENDULUM DUPLO isolators with a diameter of 640 mm and a load capacity of 1,500 kN have been supplied. Two additional units were fabricated for prototype testing, which was conducted at Sismalab in Italy, to verify seismic performance in advance.Production took place at the mageba factory in Shanghai and the installation was done under the supervision of mageba Switzerland and Mexico.
