The construction of the MVM Dome begun in June 2019 with the primary aim to host the 2022 European Men’s Handball Championship.
Currently, it is Europe’s largest handball arena with over 20,000 seats and a total area of 50,000 m².
After the championship the sport complex will continue to serve as a venue for concerts and exhibitions, as well as other indoor sports such as basketball, tennis or ice skating. Due to its size and design, it can host even certain equestrian and motorcycle races.
Next to the building a new car park and green areas have been developed along with wide walkways around the arena for visitors to use.
The steel structure of the roof, which weighs nearly 4,800 tons, is supported by 44 RESTON-SPHERICAL bearings, of which 24 were designed to carry extra loads that may arise during the construction phase of the roof.
After the negotiations the bearings were designed and produced at the Hungarian production facility of mageba with a maximum vertical load capacity of 5,000 kN each.
To withstand the torques that are generated by the significant horizontal forces of the roof, all bearings had to be designed to accommodate those as well, which posed a significant challenge during the planning stage.
