Hungary Boulevard

Project description

Hungary Boulevard, on which Bridge P-917/1 is situated, is the longest and busiest road in the city of Budapest with a total length of 13 km.

Bridge P-917/1 is just one of the boulevard’s bridges that crosses railway tracks and a main road.

In 2022, the old mat type joints of the structure were replaced in two places due to their poor condition, with flexible POLYFLEX® plug joints from mageba. In 2024, the remaining mat joints also had to be replaced.

mageba scope

To ensures a smooth and long-lasting solution for commuters, the bridge was equipped with TENSA-POLYFLEX-Advanced PU PA50 flexible plug joint. A total of 129 m of TENSA-POLYFLEX was installed in nine locations, including sidewalks.

The replacement works, which was implemented in two phases affected three traffic lanes. As a first step, the old mat expansion joint was removed and replaced with POLYFLEX on the side lane, while the traffic was diverted to the two middle lanes. Later on, the two middle lanes were closed, so the old joints could be replaced on this section as well, while traffic could freely flow on the side lane and on the tramway tracks.

Using this approach, traffic disruption could be minimized. On both sides of the POLYFLEX joints, a meter wide mastic asphalt layer was installed to prevent the formation of track grooves and to increase the service life of the new expansion joints.
