The viaduct Albrechtsgraben was built in conjunction with the state highway Bundesautobahn A71 from Erfurt to Schweinfurt, both cities of Eastern Germany.
The 770 meter long viaduct is situated west of Suhl and crosses the river the small town is named after. The concrete bridge deck lays on a single piece steel construction, which is supported by a row of pylons. A 160 meter wide arch bridges the river.
The bridge was completed and opened for traffic in December 2002.
The viaduct Albrechtsgraben was fitted with two mageba modular expansion joints, each 29 meters long, of type LR7 (expansion capacity 455mm) and LR9 (expansion capacity 585mm). Waterproof modular expansion joints are renowned for their above average lifespan and very low maintenance requirements.
To reduce noise for traversing vehicles the steel joints are fitted with sinusoidal plates attached to the running surface.
These patented solution not only reduces the level of noise caused by traversing vehicles by up to 80%, but also helps mitigate the sudden-impact effect of loud noise experienced on traditional expansion joints.
