Igelstad Bridge

Project description

Igelstad Bridge is a railway bridge in the Södertälje Municipality, south-west of Stockholm.

The bridge originally opened in 1995 as the longest railway-only bridge in Scandinavia - a length of over 2’000m. Along its length, the bridge spans over the Södertälje Canal, and the E4 motorway.

mageba RESTON®POT bearings were supplied as part of the original construction works and, after almost 20 years in service, the first bearing replacement was required.

mageba was commissioned to re-produce the original TF15 pot bearing in order to ensure seamless replacement – at 35 m above ground level, replacement was no mean feat!

mageba scope

mageba supplied a fixed type TF15 pot bearing, with vertical load bearing capacity over 28’000 kN and a diameter of 1.3 m, to replace that supplied to the original construction.

Despite an increase in both the specified vertical loads (+35 %) and horizontal loads (+300 %) between the new and the original bearings, as a result of changing design codes, mageba was able to reproduce the outer dimensions of the original bearing one-to-one in order that a simple exchange could be made, with minimal disruption and on-site concrete demolition.
