Fiddlers Elbow Bridge

Project description

The Fiddlers Elbow Bridge was constructed in the 1980’s as part of the contract for the ‘dualling’ of the A470 north of Abercynon, Wales. The viaduct are two separate bridges with each deck carrying a dual carriageway.

It carries the A472 over the River Taff linking the A470 Trunk Road at Abercynon Roundabout with the A4054 at Fiddler’s Elbow Roundabout. This is one of the main arterial routes in the region.

The wear and tear of the last 30 years made the replacement of the expansion joints essential in order to safeguard the bridge from substantial, costly and disruptive works in the future.

mageba scope

mageba supplied the following products:

• TENSA-MODULAR LR2, LR10 and LR11 modular expansion joints

In the TENSA-MODULAR joint the movement gap at the end of the bridge deck is divided into smaller individual gaps by horizontal lamella beams.

The installed modular joints are capable of vertical movements up to +/-76 mm and each side moves freely as the sides are not fixed.

Since the joints installed are LR2, LR10 and LR11 types, they feature up to 11 movement gaps.
