With a height of 182 m, the Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world – almost four times the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York, excluding pedestals.
The island on which it stands is located close to the enormous Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River, towards which the statue faces. Therefore, the island now offers visitors breathtaking views, not only of the statue but also of the nearby dam.
The project design specifications included the requirement for structures to be able to withstand earthquakes measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter scale, at a depth of up to 10 km and within a radius of 12 km.
The island, on which the statue stands can be accessed via a series of new bridges, including a main bridge with a length of 330 m.
These bridges are equipped with 169 mageba bearings – RESTON-POT and RESTON-SPHERICAL bearings for vertical loads of up to 10,500 kN, and RESTON-FORCE horizontal force bearings for horizontal loads of up to 5,900 kN.
Beyond manufacturing, mageba also supervised the installation of the bearings on site to maximise long-term service, and to ensure uninterrupted access to this monument for many years to come.
