The German A5 and A7 motorways, two of the most important roads on Germany’s high-speed autobahn network, intersect near the town of Hattenbach in central Germany.
The bridge structures which form the junction were constructed in 1967, enabling traffic to pass through this critical intersection at the high speed generally expected on the autobahns.
In 2015 and 2016, renovation works were carried out on the structures, including the replacement of the expansion joints at each end of various flyovers.
For this project, mageba supplied and installed 640 m of POLYFLEX-ADVANCED PU expansion joint, with a movement capacity of 30 mm. The selection of this non-bituminous plug expansion joint enabled the replacement work to be carried out in phases, with very little impact on traffic – a key consideration at such an important transportation node. The joint, which creates a perfectly flat transition between the structure and the road at each side, also reduces noise under traffic to a minimum and offers unsurpassed driver comfort.
In addition, mageba also supplied and installed 590 m of ROBO-DUR asphalt-strengthening ribs, which prevent deformation of the bituminous surfacing at each side of an expansion joint and thus minimise wheel impacts and the corresponding dynamic loading.
