In 2018 started the construction of the new nuclear power station with two evolutionary power reactors (EPR) in the location of Somerset, South West England, each reactor with planned thermal capacity of 4,524 MW. The nuclear power station is being constructed by EDF Energy and the completion is currently planned in 2026.
For each reactor’s building is foreseen a polar crane to support during the construction as well as service stages. Each crane has a capacity of 500 ton.
For the smooth rotation along the circular rail the cranes require 4 elastic preloaded springs that provide permanent pressure against the rail, thus keeping the crane centered.
The polar crane will also be used during the final construction stage to install the new reactor.
The Preloaded Elastic Spring Dampers are based on compressible highly viscous fluid without actual coil springs, with the advantage of not experiencing the loss of stiffness that most steel springs have.
The application for a nuclear power plant required specific testing for extreme conditions, including the simulation of the temperature increase in case of nuclear accident up to 160 °C during 72 hours, which the test prototype passed without leaks or pressure drops, thus guaranteeing the stability of the polar crane should such scenario happen.
Four Preloaded Elastic Spring Dampers (PSD) with capability of 1,200 kN and permanent nominal stiffness 2.67 kN/mm reacting on compression through their stroke of 370 mm were tested and installed in each polar crane.
