Modern buildings in seismically active areas are often designed with structurally independent parts. This construction method based on structurally independent and thus seismically isolated parts prevents the transmission of enormous seismic forces from one part of the building to another or even between entire neighboring buildings, decreasing earthquake damage. This structural separation of a building into individual sections creates gaps between those parts that need to be bridged to allow safe and comfortable passage for building users. In case of a seismic event the joints must be capable of accommodating large seismic movements.
mageba TENSA-SEISMIC expansion joints for buildings are designed to protect buildings during earthquakes. The joints operate as regular components under normal conditions with the ability to independently extend the movement capacity from +/– 62 mm to +/– 330 mm in case of an earthquake. The expansion joints stand for high user safety and comfort and their robust and durable construction reliably minimizes loads and damage on the structure.
