Hospital de las Higueras

Project description

The hospital de las Higueras is located in the Biobio Region of Chile, which was one of the most affected areas of the country during the earthquake of 2010, that had a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale.

Due to the devastation of the earthquake the construction of new buildings to increase healthcare coverage was necessary.

The new hospital buildings were designed to be seismically isolated, in accordance with latest Chilean standards.

Thanks to the development the hospital currently comprises of 3 buildings, which also extended its capacity with more than 500 beds to provide proper healthcare services for the more than 1 million inhabitants of the region.

mageba scope

To isolate the structures from the devastating effects of future earth movements, mageba provided a total of 169 seismic isolators.

For Building A, which serves as the main building of the hospital, mageba delivered 115 isolators alone, while for Building B and C 27 isolators were installed respectively.

All isolators are able to accommodate a displacement of up to 400 mm and vertical loads of up to 9,500 kN.

Before the installation, all products were tested according to the Chilean norms and to the AASHTO standards.
