Sohar Highway Interchange

Project description

The Globe Roundabout in Sohar, Oman’s fifth largest city, was a very busy, and very important junction, forming the connection between the country’s No. 1 and No. 8 highways. As part of a major reconstruction project to improve traffic flow, a long flyover was constructed to carry Highway No. 1 right across the junction. The project also included conversion of 4 km of highway from four lanes to six lanes, with various pedestrian underpasses and overpasses.

The flyover, consisting of twin parallel structures, was opened to traffic in 2014.

mageba scope

To support the decks of the twin viaducts, mageba supplied 48 RESTON-SPHERICAL bearings, designed to carry vertical loads of up to 12,450 kN. These bearings, featuring ROBO-SLIDE high-performance sliding material, were designed as fixed (type KF), free sliding (type KA) or guided sliding (type KE), depending on the deck movement/fixation requirements at each bearing location.

In accordance with project specifications, one bearing of each type was subjected to laboratory testing at Politecnico di Milano, Italy, before the bearings were installed.
