Anqing Yangtze Bridge

Project description

This cable stayed road bridge was constructed between 2000 and 2004 to carry the G50 Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway across the Yangtze, the world’s third longest river. With a length of 6,300 kilometres, all within China, the Yangtze drains one fifth of the country’s land area and its river basin is home to one third of the country’s population.

The bridge, one of a number of Yangtze River crossings for which mageba has supplied very large expansion joints and other bridge components, has a total length of 5,985 m and a main span of 510 m.

mageba scope

In 2004, when the bridge was being constructed, mageba supplied four TENSA-MODULAR expansion joints for the ends of the cable supported structure’s deck, two at each end. The joints are of type LR18, with 18 gaps accommodating longitudinal deck movements of
1,440 mm.

The joints were designed for welded connections to the bridge’s steel deck at one side and concreted connection to an abutment at the other. Due to their great size, and manufacture in Europe (prior to the establishment of mageba’s Shanghai factory in 2005), the joints were assembled on the bridge for transportation reasons.
