Yet another Yangtze River crossing in Nanjing

The TENSA®MODULAR expansion joints recently installed on the new Longtan Yangtze River Bridge are notable not only for their enormous size and their “easy-replacement” design – the project marks the FIFTH major crossing of the mighty Yangtze River in the city of Nanjing to be equipped with expansion joints of this type!

If you are ever interested to see a 25-year history of the world’s most advanced modular expansion joint for bridges, visit Nanjing – China’s eighth largest city on the mighty Yangtze River. No fewer than five major cable-supported bridges have been constructed there using TENSA®MODULAR expansion joints, stretching all the way back to the year 2000:

And now, with the completion of our latest project, we can add another to the list:

  • The Longtan Yangtze River Bridge – with 19-gap joints, installed in 2024

The continuous development and improvement of the TENSA®MODULAR expansion joint during this period can be seen by touring the bridges in that order – for example, the recently installed joints of the Longtan Yangtze River Bridge represent the first use of the fifth-generation TENSA®MODULAR joint in China. They also feature the special “Quick-Ex” design – which had not yet been invented at the time of the earlier projects – which will enable the joints to be easily replaced at the end of their life cycle, with the concreted-in parts retained to minimize impacts on the structure and on traffic.

Nanjing is a remarkable city with a proud history and is well worth a visit – and if you are fascinated by spectacular bridges and extraordinary expansion joints, as we are, watch out for the five Yangtze River crossings with our bridge expansion joints in them!
