Supporting cost-effective designs

When rising steel costs prompted the developer of the NOVA San Ángel building in Mexico City to change the design from steelwork to reinforced concrete, mageba helped develop the seismic isolation system required by the new design and then supplied the bearings needed to support the structure.

NOVA San Ángel is a luxury apartment building in Mexico City, with seven basement levels and 22 levels above ground. It was originally designed with a steel structure, but due to a significant increase in steel costs it was redesigned with a reinforced concrete frame. This change necessitated the provision of a seismic isolation system to protect the concrete structure from the ground movements that can arise during earthquakes in Mexico City. No question that mageba's local team was happy to assist the building’s designers in developing the optimal isolation solution. This involved the use of both LASTO®LRB lead rubber bearings and RESTON®SLIDER bearings, a combination that had already been used to protect various tall buildings throughout Latin America such as the AURÉ Building and the Elemento Building in Guatemala, the Sky Building in Ecuador and the Casa 159 Building in El Salvador.

The project required the design and fabrication of 28 LASTO®LRB lead rubber bearings and 8 RESTON®SLIDERS, with prototype testing and factory production control testing carried out before installation. The LASTO®LRB lead rubber bearings were designed for vertical loads of up to 18,700 KN and displacements of 275 mm, while the RESTON®SLIDER bearings were designed for the same displacements but much lower loads.

All of the devices have now been installed with mageba on-site assistance, ready to support the building as it stretches skywards – and our experienced team looks forward to supporting you in developing a seismic isolation solution for your next project!
