Highway 22, also known as the Bay Highway, is a suburban freeway in the Haifa metropolitan area of northern Israel, connecting downtown Haifa with the city’s northern exit to the Krayot area.
As part of the highway’s construction project, an interchange was constructed in 2008 to connect with the Yigael Yadin Road, providing access to the new Carmel Tunnels. The interchange also includes crossings of the Kishon River and a railway line, replacing a dangerous level crossing.
Eight TENSA-MODULAR expansion joints of types LR4 and LR5 (with 4 and 5 movement gaps respectively) were required for the construction of the highway interchange. The larger LR5 joints each accommodate longitudinal deck movements of 400 mm. Some of the joints, with lengths of up to 21 m, required butt-welding on site, having been delivered in sections for transportation reasons.
For corrosion protection, the joints were hot dip galvanised rather than painted, as specified by the client.
