The NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation) added two new travel lanes in each direction to an 8-mile stretch of the I-85. Adding four new travel lanes in the counties of Cabarrus and Rowan intends to improve the traffic flow within the region. The project was executed in two parts:
Work performed on the first section (I-3802A) stretched from north of NC 73 (Exit 55) to the north of Lane Street (Exit 63) in Cabarrus County and ended just north of Moose Road in Rowan County.
The second section (I-3802B), begins north of Moose Road and ends just north of the Old U.S. 29/U.S. 601/I-85 Connector in Rowan County.
The project also included the construction of a new interchange at mile post 65 for the Old Beatty Ford Road, which completed the expansion of I-85 through Cabarrus and Rowan counties. Without putting these actions into motion, traffic volumes are predicted to increase annually and ultimately exceed capacity by 2035.
mageba supplied a series of strip seal expansion joints and barrier cover plates for the I-85 widening.
Twelve TENSA-FORCE RG10 expansion joints were fabricated and delivered. Each joint was designed to accommodate movement in the bridge.
In addition, mageba provided 16 barrier cover plates for the movement gaps in the concrete traffic barriers.
We made sure that the cover plates installed were in accordance with the NCDOT plans and specifications.
