Bridge 28 over Tar River
Project description
The Tar River of North Carolina is approximately 215 mi (346 km) long and flows southeast towards the estuary of Pamlico Sound. The river empties into another body of water, the tidal Pamlico River, after passing under the U.S. Highway 17 Bridge in Washington, North Carolina.
According to the NCDOT Bridge Information, Bridge 28 carried a safety rating of 45.86 out of 100. Although it was built in 1952, it is not considered structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
Despite an absence of complications, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) resolved to replace Bridge 28. The estimated cost of the project was $6,375,000.

All steel and iron products that are permanently incorporated in this project were produced in the United States.
2 TENSA-FORCE RG10 strip seal expansion joints with a total length of 39.55 ft (12 m) were used to accommodate the bridge movements. In addition, the joints were also fitted with barrier cover plates as per project design drawings.
All joints were designed and manufactured in accordance to specified bid drawings approved by NCDOT.
