West Gate Tunnel

Project description

West Gate Tunnel is a 5-km toll road in Melbourne, which connects West Gate Freeway at Yarraville with the Port of Melbourne and CityLink at the Docklands via a twin tunnel.

The project that costed approximately 6.7 Billion Dollars, also involves the construction of a new bridge and an elevated road section.

The main goals of the development are to alleviate the traffic congestion on the M1 and to provide a new river crossing as an alternative to West Gate Bridge.

The tunnel also helps to reduce the heavy traffic of the residential streets in Melbourne’s inner west.

mageba scope

For this infrastructure development project mageba supplied 750 LASTO-BLOCK
elastomeric bearings and 329 RESTON-POT HP bearings along with 1,070 linear meters of TENSA-SEAL expansion joint also supplied.

The installed pot bearings have a maximum vertical load capacity of 33,000 kN while their maximum horizontal load capacity reaches 4,500 kN.

The testing of the bearings was performed in mageba’s NATA lab which is capable of testing vertical loads up to 20,000 kN, as well as in mageba’s NATA ILAC MRA facility facility in Asia which is capable of testing vertical load up to 60,000 kN.
