Pont Neuf

Project description

The new Aare Bridge was built to replace the old concrete bridge, constructed in 1949. The new structure blends into Aarau’s distinctive cityscape and the natural environment of the Aare River while strengthening the region’s transportation network. As a comprehensive bridge and riverbank design, the project has created an appealing urban space, and with its distinctive, elegantly curved arches it has become a new landmark.

An important aspect of the new bridge is its monolithic supporting structure, in which all of the components – pillar foundations, pillars, arches, flanks, roadway, parapets – create a uniform, seamless construction and are involved in supporting the load, which leads to an optimized and thus sustainable solution.

The 119 meter-long structure has a width of 17.5 m and carries two lanes, sidewalks on both sides and bicycle tracks.

mageba scope

Since the bridge is in the immediate vicinity of residential areas, it was decided to use mageba’s TENSA-POLYFLEX-Advanced PU plug joint, which is based on elastic polymers and characterized by “zero additional noise emission” caused by crossing traffic compared to the adjacent road surface. In total 50 m of type PA60 joint was installed.

The TENSA-POLYFLEX joints are typically placed within the depth of a bridge’s bituminous road surfacing, and can be easily installed in phases.

In addition to the plug type joint, 16 LASTO-BLOCK elastomeric bearings of type NBa were also installed to support the bridge structure.
