Mumbai sea crossing completion

India's longest sea bridge, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), which was constructed using mageba bearings and expansion joints, was inaugurated in January 2024

Following on from mageba’s design, manufacture and delivery of the bearings and expansion joints required for the construction of Mumbai’s Bandra-Worli Sea Link, mageba has now also done the same for the city’s spectacular new Trans Harbour Link. With a length of 21.8 kilometres, it required an enormous number of bearings and expansion joints to support its superstructures and accommodate their movements, and mageba’s team in Kolkata was honoured to be also entrusted with supplying these critical components of this landmark structure. Having supplied hundreds of RESTON®SPHERICAL bearings earlier in the bridge construction process, as reported in a previous newsletter, we more recently completed the supply of the expansion joints required – over 1900 metres of them in total, nearly all of the TENSA®MODULAR type, with up to 10 individual movement gaps each. 75 metres of TENSA®MAT-type expansion joints were also supplied to form longitudinal joints in the superstructure.

The construction was completed in December 2023, and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th January 2024, marking the completion of the second sea crossing in Mumbai that relies on mageba’s high-quality bearing and expansion joint solutions.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, completed in December 2023, was constructed using mageba bearings and expansion joints

With a length of 21.8 kilometres, the new Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is now India's longest sea bridge

The bridge is Mumbai’s second major sea crossing – after the Bandra Worli Sea Link, which was constructed using mageba bearings and expansion joints over a decade earlier

mageba previously supplied over 400 RESTON®SPHERICAL bearings to support the sea link’s superstructures and accommodate their movements

TENSA®MAT-type expansion joints, with a rubber slab forming the driving surface, were supplied to create longitudinal expansion joints in the superstructure

Lifting of one of the many TENSA®MODULAR expansion joints into place in the superstructure of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

The TENSA®MODULAR expansion joints supplied, with a total length of almost two kilometres, have up to ten movement gaps each

Following its completion in December 2023, the Mumbai Trans Harbour link joins the Bandra-Worli Sea Link as another major sea crossing in Mumbai on the construction of which we at mageba are very proud to have participated
