Thuwal is a town on Saudi Arabia’s east coast, across the Red Sea from Africa. It is located 80 km north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s second largest city. Originally a fishing village, Thuwal has been continually developed in recent years, by the Royal Saudi Navy in particular. The town is now home to important institutions such as the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, which opened in 2009.
As part of the town’s development, the contractor Al Muhaidib has built three new multi-span bridges to improve access to the town, designed to protect the road from the kind of flooding that devastated Jeddah in early 2011.
mageba supplied the expansion joints required by the town’s three new bridges. Considering the movement requirement of maximum 160 mm per joint, TENSA-MODULAR joints of type LR2, with two individual movement gaps each, were selected for use. 20 of these joints were supplied in total.
To accommodate pedestrian / cycle traffic at the edge of the road, and to cover the movement gaps in the parapets at each side, profiled steel cover plates were also supplied. These are anchored at one side of the movement gap and slide at the other, creating a flat, safe surface for these bridge users.
