Kömürhan Bridge

Project description

The Kömürhan Bridge runs over the Euphrates River in Eastern Turkey at the 51st km of the Elazığ-Malatya highway.

The old bridge, which used to have a historical importance, was flooded after the Karakaya Dam was built.

For the construction of the new bridge, which started in 2014, the same amount of steel was incorporated as it was used to build the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The Kömürhan Bridge is a modern cable-stayed bridge that carries 4 lanes and has a total length of 660 m. Its single main pylon has a height of 165 m.

The bridge offers both a faster connection and a stunning view for travellers.

mageba scope

For this structure mageba supplied 6 RESTON-SPHERICAL bearings, 2 RESTON-UD uplift devices and 2 TENSA-MODULAR LR8 expansion joints, each measuring 11 m in length.

Due to the special requirements such as the negative loadings (uplift), special uplift devices were required to be designed and installed in 2018.

The supplied expansion joints were installed only at one end of the bridge due to the structure’s unique design.

The installation of the joints was finished in October 2020 and the bridge was opened to traffic in December of the same year.
