The Newark Liberty International Airport is one of the biggest airports of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It is located in the state of New Jersey.
The existing Terminal A is the oldest terminal of the airport and has undergone two upgrades in 1995 and 2004. The facility reached the end of its service life, with deficiencies that challenged an efficient implementation of modern airline and security requirement.
The Terminal One Re-Development Program puts the airport in a position where it can meet the needs of passengers and airlines alike of the 21st century.
The program administered a series of projects including: replacing the Terminal A building with a new structure, constructing a new roadway-access network, transforming the airfield to serve the new terminal building and provide an extra parking garage at the front of the terminal building.
In regards to the Terminal One Redevelopment Program, mageba provided 3 TENSA®MODULAR LR4 modular expansion joints, along with 2 TENSA®GRIP RG10 modified strip seal joints and 1 TENSA®GRIP RS-LS3 joints with a total length of 94.5 ft (28.8 m), 97 ft (29.5 m), 15 ft (4.5 m) respectively.
Along with the 6 expansion joints, 6 Barrier cover plates were also designed and used in the project.
All products were designed and fabricated in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications.
The mageba expansion joints were fatigue tested according to the AASHTO Appendix A19, but instead of the 2 million cycles required by AASHTO, the load cycles were increased to 10 million.
